Domme
What a Domme is, how the term relates to Dominatrix and Mistress, and what female-identifying dominance looks like in practice.
What a Domme is
A Domme is a Dominant who identifies as a woman. The word is the feminine form of Dom and is pronounced the same way. It is used both as an identity and as a form of address, and on Sanctum it is one of the thirteen roles a member can hold.
Also written as Domme, Dominatrix, or Femdom (the latter usually for the genre or dynamic rather than the person). Mistress is a related but distinct title, often more formal and sometimes earned rather than assumed.
The word Dominatrix carries connotations of professional work and a particular leather-and-heels aesthetic. Many Dommes embrace that imagery. Many others do not and lead in jeans, in cardigans, or in nothing visually distinctive at all. Dominance is a position, not a wardrobe.
What a Domme does
The role is the same as any Dominant's: she leads within the boundaries a submissive has set, and she takes responsibility for the dynamic. The specifics vary enormously.
- Styles. Strict and formal; warm and nurturing; cruel in play and tender afterward; playful and teasing; quietly commanding. There is no single correct way to be a Domme.
- Scope. Some lead for a scene, some for an evening, some run an entire household or lifestyle dynamic.
- Focus. Service, sensation, control, humiliation, worship, training, discipline, or a blend. The focus follows what she and her submissive both want.
A Domme's authority is granted by the people who submit to her. It is not conferred by the word itself, and no one owes deference to a Domme they have not chosen.
Dommes and the wider culture
Female dominance has a long history in kink and remains one of the most visible and most misunderstood parts of it. Dommes are frequently assumed to be professionals, to be performing, or to be available to anyone who addresses them correctly. None of these follow from the role.
Lifestyle Dommes lead for their own fulfilment and that of their partners. Professional Dommes provide a skilled service with its own ethics and boundaries. Both are legitimate, and the two are not mutually exclusive. What they share is the right to decide who they engage with and on what terms.
On address
Whether to call someone Domme, Ma'am, Mistress, Goddess, or by her name is her decision and usually negotiated. Ask. Assuming a title with a stranger tends to land as presumptuous rather than respectful.
