24/7 and total power exchange

What 24/7 and total power exchange (TPE) mean, how they differ, and what living in a full-time dynamic actually involves.

What the terms mean

A 24/7 dynamic is one that is always in force. The Dominant's authority and the submissive's role do not switch off at the end of a scene or when the pair leave the bedroom; they run through daily life. The pair live their dynamic rather than visiting it.

Total power exchange, or TPE, goes further. In a TPE dynamic the submissive has, in principle, handed authority over all areas of their life to the Dominant. The Dominant decides, or has the right to decide, anything. Most TPE dynamics are also 24/7, but 24/7 does not imply TPE: a pair can live a full-time dynamic that covers only certain areas.

Also used: 24/7, full-time, lifestyle (as in "lifestyle dynamic"), TPE, total power exchange, and M/s, which is the most common frame for both.

What 24/7 looks like

Living a dynamic full-time is mostly ordinary. The pair go to work, cook dinner, see friends, pay bills. What differs is the structure running underneath:

  • Protocols that mark the dynamic throughout the day, even at low intensity.
  • Rules the submissive follows without being reminded.
  • Decisions that route through the Dominant, in the areas agreed.
  • A tone between the two that reflects the roles even in casual moments.

What TPE involves

In TPE the scope is total, which makes the Dominant's responsibility total too. A Dominant who holds authority over a submissive's schedule, health, finances, appearance, and relationships has taken on an enormous duty of care. TPE done well is as much about the Dominant's stewardship as the submissive's surrender.

In practice, TPE dynamics almost always involve the Dominant delegating large parts of daily decision-making back to the submissive. The authority exists; it is not exercised on every detail. The submissive knows the Dominant could decide, and that knowledge is the substance of the exchange.

Consent in TPE remains ongoing. The submissive can withdraw; the dynamic can be renegotiated or ended. "Total" describes the scope of what has been offered, not a surrender of the right to take it back. Anyone presenting TPE as irrevocable is describing something other than kink.

Is it for you

Full-time dynamics suit people who find structure fulfilling, who communicate well, and who have the stability to sustain it. They are harder than scene-based play in some ways (there is no off switch) and easier in others (the dynamic does not need to be rebuilt each time).

Pairs usually arrive at 24/7 gradually, extending scope as trust grows. Regular check-ins matter more here than anywhere, because the dynamic touches everything and small problems have nowhere to hide.
